Applebaum:

Someday, perhaps, when Iraq’s civil war is over, and when Iraqis have achieved a measure of personal safety—an even more basic human requirement than political freedom—it may be possible for Iraqis, at least, to think objectively about the physical and the psychological damage that Saddam’s regime did to their country and about the ways in which that damage helped feed the insurgency.

Huh.

You see, it was my belief that the Iraqis are probably better equipped than anyone to think about the psychological damage that Hussein’s regime did to their country. Indeed, I’d probably go so far as to say that the typical Iraqi has a more, well, objective picture of Saddam’s regime than Anne Applebaum ever will. The kicker, of course, is that Applebaum’s column is about how people should stop viewing Saddam Hussein as a geopolitical pawn. It seems that Anne can’t manage to stop viewing ordinary Iraqis as rhetorical props.
