With due respect to Juan Cole, the anti-democratic potential in the Tim Johnson situation is structural, and has little if anything to do with the contemporary character of the Republican Party. If a similar but opposite situation developed, I would expect the Democratic governor to nominate a Democrat, and the left side of the blogosphere would freak out if s/he didn’t.
