Let’s deal with some obvious truths:

  • Yes, a playoff is better than the BCS.
  • Yes, the NCAA and the university presidents are lying when they say that a playoff in Division I-A is impossible.
  • Yes, except for those extremely rare cases in which there are two, and only two, undefeated teams, the BCS will produce a final game that is unsatisfying to some.
  • No, the haphazard poll based system that existed prior to the BCS did NOT do a better job at producing a final game. At best it was a wash, and at worst two undefeated teams didn’t end up playing one another.
  • Yes, it was inevitable that the BCS system would be slowly gutted in response to the endless complaining of those who suffered momentary disadvantage because of it.

Pat Forde, please re-write your column with these truths in mind. In particular, don’t make a statement like “only the BCS can produce this sort of confusion and conflicted outcome” unless your audience consists only of ten year olds.
