With Joe “Rapist’s Rights” Lieberman! Who knows that all women own cars, have plenty of time and money, jobs they won’t lose if they have to take extra time off, etc.

And Echidne makes a good point about the rather obvious problems that would arise from a “principle” objection to general rules. What general laws can we create, exactly, if it’s wrong to ever make people compromise about principles? And why should the “contraception is wrong” principle triumph over “rape victims should have access to emergency contraception” principle? This is similar to the “expressive association” arguments, I guess, but while the Catholic Church is constitutionally free to teach any principles about contraception that it likes, when it comes to the secular public service offered by the institution it’s perfectly reasonable to subject it to general rules that have a compelling secular justification.
