Adios, Dan.

Dan Wilson was the primary starting catcher for eleven Mariners teams, including four playoff squads. He caught 123 games for the 2001 team that won 116 games. Although his skills have deteriorated as of late, he always remained a class act, committed to the community and aware of his responsibilities as a public figure. I think it’s fair to say that he is the finest catcher the Mariners have ever fielded, eclipsing such giants of baseball as Dave Valle, Scott Bradley, Bob Kearney, and Rick Sweet.

UPDATE: And while I’m on the subject of baseball, the finest player to ever swing a bat is returning tonight against the San Diego Padres. To mark this occasion, ESPN is showing figure skating, and ESPN2 is showing pocket billiards.

Ooh, and a controverial ground rule double. I would have liked to see that.

Welcome back, Barry.
