s.z. on Coyote Ugly. The even more heart-warming ending is that David McNally would go onto to direct Kangaroo Jack, the La Regle Du Jeu of crudely animated faux-hipster kangaroo movies.

In other bad movie news:

  • Among the general hilarity of TBogg’s account of a wingnut script contest is the information that Lionel Chetwynd–auteur of D.C. 9/11: Time Of Crisis and The Hanoi Hilton–was once Oscar nominated. I knew that fellow wingnut (well, maybe he was still using his vulgar Maoism to defend Maoism at the time) hack Roger L. Simon had been nominated for his adaptation of Enemies: A Love Story–a widely liked movie that convinced me that I don’t get Paul Mazursky–but Chetwynd? He’s a bigger embarrassment to Canada than Howie Mandel and Nickelback put together. But, looking at his IMDB profile, I saw what must be the source: he wrote the screenplay for a film version of Mordecai Richler’s wonderful novel The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. So, if you’re an aspiring wingnut screenwriter, your ticket to being able to write all the dreck you want is to adapt a novel by a vastly more talented novelist. Not for this contest, though. If you’re looking to impress Simon, Chetwynd and Milius, your model should be King Vidor’s film version of The Fountainhead, except 1)with less subtle political rhetoric in the dialogue, and 2)more phallic imagery.

  • I have never heard of the film Chaos, apparently now playing at a theater near you. But I believe that it has an unprecedentedly low metacritic score for a wide-release movie of 3 (out of 100, not 10.) Let’s just say that a movie where Tara Reid played a nuclear scientist got a 9, Kangaroo Jack got a 16, and Boat Trip got an 18. (Admittedly, Scenes From a Mall might have given any of them a run for their money…)
