Bankrupt in Utah

I share Matt Yglesias’ mild surprise at Utah’s spot at the top of the bankruptcy listings. I’ve never given the topic much thought, but I sort of expected that bankruptcy declarations would be higher in states with large urban populations. Lots of rich people live in cities, but so do lots of poor people, and prices tend to be a lot higher. I suppose there’s a silver lining to every cloud; the bastards who elected these assholes are going to be the ones who pay most dearly. It’s too bad they have to take so many others down with them.
