Based on my first (wine drenched) perusal, The Return of the King: Extended Edition is well worth the time and cash. Notable additions include a satisfactory end to Saruman’s story, Aragorn’s battle with the Corsairs of Umbar, and the appearance of the Mouth of Sauron. I was less impressed by the confrontation between the Witch King and Gandalf. Got emotional at Theoden’s death, although the wine may have played a part. Every scene with or pertaining to Arwen is as bad as you remember.

UPDATE: I should add that the most significant purchase I made yesterday was Takeshi Kitano’s Zaitoichi/Sonatine DVD set. Zaitoichi is fine, glad to have it, but probably wouldn’t have purchased it on its own. Sonatine is one of my favorite films; if you haven’t seen it, do so immediately.
