Bobby Fischer is one crazy motherfucker. He’s been detained for some time in Japan on a visa violation; the US stripped him of his passport after he played Boris Spassky in a renegade championship match in Yugoslavia during the 1990s. I remember the general excitement in the chess world at his return in 1992, although even then people were noting that he didn’t seem quite right. A world champion exiles himself for twenty years over a rules snafu? And he’s not entirely stable? Go figure. His return came on the heels of the really big Karpov-Kasparov world championship, and he tore into both of them, Karpov legitimately and Kasparov for no apparent reason. Since then, he’s been wandering the earth trying to make people pay attention to him.

I don’t know what he needs, but I hope he finds it in Iceland.
