Matt at What is the War has a nice essay on the differences between the Clinton and Bush doctrines. For my part, I very much wonder how the conservatives (Instapundit, Tacitus.org, and so forth) have managed to seize the Darfur issue. Put another way, how is it that the same people who regularly denounced the foreign policy of the Clinton administration, and who stepped up for the invasion of Iraq just as quickly as their little feet would carry them, and who have bought the most strained humanitarian arguments for the invasion that the administration has to offer, can still refer to the Darfur crisis as the fault of darned liberal-socialist-French loving-atheist-internationalists? How can people who supported bogging down the U.S. Army and the Marines in Iraq for God knows how long also complain about the lack of response to Darfur, when the latter is a direct consequence of the former, and when everyone who has been paying the faintest attention to both countries knows that the humanitarian disaster in Sudan is far worse than in Iraq?

The mind boggles; intellectual consistency is not a high value in conservative circles these days. In their defense, the conservatives often argue that European or other UN-sponsored forces should respond to Darfur, and in a sense they’re quite right. In another, more relevant sense they’re quite wrong, as they all should and do realize that these operations typically don’t happen without the support of the hegemon, who is currently otherwise occupied.
