To the extent that mainstream conservative commentary — whatever that means at this stage in history — is any indication, Paul’s thesis that Republicans will prove as tied to Bart O’Kavanaugh as they are to Trump would appear to be holding strong. The NRO, the Weekly Standard, the WaPo’s house Bush-era torture apologist, C.C.W. Cooke, Ponnuru.

For the reasons Paul states the idea that it’s likely that this is all a massive Democratic conspiracy is ludicrous, and the arguments are inevitably terrible. (The “Flight 93 Nomination” article, for example, shows no recognition that someone who votes like Kavanaugh will get the seat no matter what, and indeed the crude political self-interest of the Democratic Party would be for Kavanaugh rather than someone equally conservative but less politically toxic like Coney Barrett to be confirmed.) But this one — I’ll quote Cooke, but the argument is ubiquitous among conservative pundits on Twitter — is extra special:

Why would an adult go repeatedly to parties at which minors were being gang raped, and, having figured out what was going on, resolve only to “avoid the punch”? Did Ms. Swetnick tell anybody what she had seen? Why did she keep going back?

Bill Cosby was sentenced yesterday. Larry Nasser was sentenced in February for a series of assaults that began no later than 1994. If only there was a recent critically and commercially successful popular entertainment that could gotten such realities more attention.
