It’s real.

A new WSJ/NBC poll puts Trump’s approval rating at 45%, which is the highest figure this particular poll has recorded during his presidency:

President Donald Trump’s approval rating edged higher during a week in which he faced withering criticism following a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling that he is positioned to weather the latest controversy sparked by his unusual brand of politics.

Yeah, unusual.

Why is this happening? Because Republicans love him.  Trump is incredibly popular with voters from his own party — much more so than almost any other president since they started measuring these kinds of things 70 years ago:

The good news for President Trump in the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll — half of which was conducted before and the day of the Helsinki presser with Putin, half of which was conducted afterward — is that his standing with the GOP base is stronger than ever.

Eighty-eight percent of Republican voters in the poll approve of Trump’s job — the highest of his presidency — and 29 percent of all voters strongly approve of his performance, which is another high for him. “The more Trump gets criticized by the media, the more his base seems to rally behind him,” says Democratic pollster Fred Yang, who co-conducted the NBC/WSJ poll with the Republican team from Public Opinion Strategies.

Trump’s approval rating in the poll is 45 percent among all registered voters (up 1 point from June), while 52 percent disapprove, including 44 percent who do so strongly.
Now on the bright side, such as it is, the number of voters who disapprove of Trump strongly is identical to the number who approve of him at all.  Also too, a year and a half into his presidency, Trump has never come close at any point to getting the approval of half of America’s voters.  (That’s a pretty odd form of democracy, but we can thank the Genius of the Framers, and also some totally not racist people in western Pennsylvania, who just don’t like uppity football players disrespecting the flag.  Let’s meet three of them at this coffee shop).
It’s five o’clock somewhere.
