Natasha Bertrand makes a point that’s not made enough:

We have no way of measuring how impactful, but the targeted Wikileaks email dump half an hour after Farenthold’s scoop was a very successful piece of ratfucking. Not only did it blunt the impact of the one story that could have been Trump’s EMAILS! (well, except to the extent that it actually involved very serious misconduct), it also meant that reporters spent a lot of time and resources that might have, in the wake of “grab ’em by the pussy,” been used trying to uncover stuff like Trump’s payoffs to porn stars were instead used to study inane trivia from John Podesta’s inbox.

Especially as long as Trump is in the White House doing nothing about it, this kind of thing will happen again. But it would be nice if journalists were a little more conscious of how they’re being used next time.
