Exhibit 4,000,000 in why the border wall is worthless, driving people into the desert to die while not even slowing down drug smuggling.

Another boondoggle for KBR. LBJ must be laughing from whatever level of the Inferno he presently occupies.

  • rea

Evidently we need an underground wall, or something.

      Conservatives:

And somewhere, south of the border, there’s a Hispanic Scotty working on developing a transporter to beam illegals and drugs through the border walls.

We need to spend hundreds of billions on a Defense Shield for this!

      • Glenn

Am trying to imagine what Spanish spoken with a Scottish burr sounds like…

        • c u n d gulag

          Badges?
We don’t RrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrEQUIRE any stinkin’ badges!

        • Actually, I can. I worked with a guy from Veracruz who learned his English in Edinburgh.

          • ajay

Cue a Mexican-accented version of Alex Renton from Trainspotting:

Some people hate the gringos. But I don’t. They’re just wankers. But we’re worse! We’ve been colonised by wankers!

  • A nation that physically walls itself off from its neighbors and militarizes its border isn’t just making a decision about immigration and border security. It’s making a decision about what kind of nation is it.

I don’t know if the Republicans just don’t understand this, or if they are actually in favor of us becoming a papers-please society, hiding behind fortifications.

    • JosephW

Yes, the Republican Party. Doing its best to prove how much better the US is after winning the Cold War against the godless, heathen Communists, by turning around and becoming just like the Communists.

      • rea

Not just like the communists. Say what you will about communism, dude, at least it’s an ethos.

        • DrDick

And they had full employment! Something the GOP is adamantly opposed to.

          • On the other hand, they had a foreign policy dominated by imperialistic militarism.

I remember back in 2001, when the Weekly Standard and National Review were explicitly making the argument, in support of the broadest possible definition of the War on Terror, that “Americanism” should be pursued the same way the Soviets exported revolutionary communism.

It’s the only time I’ve seen the right wing say we should be more like the Soviets.

            • DrDick

One of the candidates (Bachmann?) said that the US should be more like China the other day.

    • Hogan

      Every community a gated community.

  • A migrant farm workers’ strike in the middle of the summer would be quite eye-opening. If the people who do the lion’s share of the harvesting of so much of the fruits and vegetables we eat are such an abomination to so many Americans, then let’s see these real Americans harvest it themselves or let it rot in the fields. The anti-immigration folks are sapping this country’s strength, making us all look like loons, and giving huge sums of our tax dollars to companies that rip us off. We need a national stfu week and a foadiaf you miserable jackass day.

My only objection to your statement is that I had to look up foadiaf =0)

    • Hogan

United Farm Workers are all over that.

  • Mudge

Hell, let’s build a wall. Hire Laborers and Operating Engineers at union wages (not KBR) and pump billions into it. Make it the best damn wall ever. A little stimulus is better than none.

    Then tear it down.

It’s better than digging a hole and filling it in.

    • Let it be covered with vibrant, graphic graffiti and documented before we tear it down. Auction off the wall and use the money to repair our infrastructure. Bridges are falling down and the nuts want to build a wall. Do they want to build one between U.S. and the Atlantic and Pacific as well? I’ve been looking all over for a paper I read on the internet before that addressed the nature of stupidity and it’s tendency to make for a lot of lose/lose situations. If anyone here sees it, please post a link to it. We’re drowning in idiocy here.

      • Spud

Of course the wall will be built using cheap migrant labor.

The construction industry is one of the top 3 users of illegal labor

The bigoted morons who are harping on this issue now don’t quite realize that the collapse of the construction industry caused about 3-5 million illegals to leave the country on their own since 2008.

        • Njorl

The obvious solution is to subsidize the Mexican government so they can hire American contractors to build the wall in Mexico, with Mexican labor.

Used in an episode of Reno: 911, actually.

  • Njorl

I recommend digging a 100 foot wide trench from Atlantic to Pacific down to the magma.

  • DrDick

Of course, you always have to remember that for the conservative xenophobic racists who support this dumbshit boondoggle a bunch of dead Mexicans in the desert is a plus.

    • firefall

yeah I was thinking the same, that this is actually working as intended, killing mexicans and not really impeding drug imports

      • DrDick

Ingestion of massive quantities of (bad) drugs would certainly explain Republican policy proposals. That or simply brain death.

  • Josh G.

So what is your recommended alternative? Throw up our hands and surrender? If there is no control over the flow of immigrants across the border, then blue-collar labor (especially unskilled blue-collar labor) in the U.S. will never again have any bargaining power worth speaking of. This is a recipe for endless wage stagnation.

My primary concern is with the well-being of the American middle class, and I do not think mass immigration furthers its interests.

    • DrDick

Hate to break it to you, but immigration, especially illegal immigration, is down and many who are are already here are going home. The reasons are simple most of these people are here to make more money than they can at home. You want to cut down illegal immigration, then you need to help build up the economies in their home countries. Also worth noting that, without immigration, our population would be declining, just like the rest of the OECD.

    • BigHank53

How about this: the next time we send some hapless shmoe back to some shit-poor village in Nicaragua, we send the guy who hired him there too? Let him think about his hiring policies on the walk home.

I know there has been endless whining about the particulars of the J-9 form, what with employers having to evaluate prospective hires’ paperwork. Fine. If the alternative to hiring an illegal is hiring nobody, then your business model was doomed anyway.

Unless your alternative is outsourcing. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.

I hate to break the news to you, but unskilled blue collar labor will never be taken seriously again. They are expendable, fungible assets.

Short of civil service, the days when an unskilled, uneducated person could join the ranks of the middle class are effectively over. Employers just don’t see the need for paying stupid people enough to live on these days.

Why should companies take them seriously when they could easily handle the manufacturing overseas where you could have the work done by children.

If we have enough people who are dumb and unskilled enough that their jobs can be taken away by an illegal alien, then our education system must be failing.

The middle class is not the ones being affected by this. People with skills and education don’t worry about illegal aliens. Wage stagnation for the middle class is caused by factors more complex than the knee jerk ignorant claptrap associated with the illegal alien issue.

The only reason why illegal aliens are a major talking point these days is because bigotry and xenophobia is always good for diverting attention away from hapless actions by governments in the face of a stagnant economy.
Its main appeal is it allows people to act like bigoted jerkwads in public without the threat of social sanction. Plus it makes it easier to scare people into voting away civil liberties.

    • Josh G.,

We already have mass immigration – mass illegal immigration. I believe the government will be able to change the centuries-old pattern of mass immigration just as soon as it finished stamping out marijuana.

The only thing that immigration control does is put the federal government’s boot on the necks of those immigrant-workers, and giving employers a cudgel to keep them in line. Keeping these workers as a reserve army of second-class citizens is what really drives down wages.

Which is why the unions want to legalize and organize them, not build useless fences.
