As Doug says, it doesn’t get much more embarrassing than this. And as of now the howler remains uncorrected. And Clive Crook still finds this transparently idiotic analysis very compelling.

I thought that statistic looked suspicious, but I was too lazy to look it up. I should be a journalist.
Watching Yglesias flounder around trying to correct his own series of typos, errors & general incoherence just makes it funnier.
I almost want to think that the typos and errors on Yglesias’ part are a clever satirical farce excoriating Crook. If it’s not, it should be.
It begins to look as though expecting even minimal competence among our elite journalists is far too much.
From Foreign Policy, not terribly surprising. Some years back, they ran a piece by Anders Aslund about how much better off people were in the post-USSR Russia that got mortality figures backwards. Anything to make the point that capitalism is Good For You and socialism Is Not.
I clicked on the link and noticed Mr. Crook’s bio for the first time. The Economist for 11 years. That explains a lot about both.
