Federal health officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak tied to jalapeños that has sickened 345 people in 27 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.
The jalapeños were supplied by California-based Coast Citrus Distributors and sourced from Mexico, the CDC said. They were served at Chipotle, Qdoba and other restaurants.
Minnesota and Colorado account for the vast majority of cases, with 110 each. Illinois has reported 30 cases and Kansas 13. The remaining states are Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Thirty-six people have been hospitalized, the CDC said. No deaths have been reported.
We can be confident that the CDC will respond to this with the urgency with which they responded to the last outbreak, which should terrify the queso out of everybody:
The Trump administration continues to respond sluggishly to the explosive, nationwide outbreak of Cyclospora—a unicellular parasite spread from human feces that has now sickened nearly 23,000 people in 47 states, killing two and sending over 500 to the hospital.
Michigan health officials reported the two deaths Monday, and The Washington Post first reported Tuesday that federal health officials have expanded a list of states with linked cases from nine to 15. But those updates still have not appeared on public outbreak pages for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the Food and Drug Administration, and Americans are struggling to understand the risk of eating fresh fruits and vegetables.
In comments to Ars Technica on Monday, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees CDC and FDA, said the outbreak information will be updated sometime “this week.” Sources for The New York Times said that the CDC plans to set up a “formal response team” for the outbreak sometime this week. Cases in the outbreak began in June.
It’s not really realistic to expect the head of HHS to be focused on trivia like “widespread bacterial outbreaks” when he needs to be focused on more important questions like “establishing the link between vaccines and having a voice that sounds like Donald Duck just swallowed a pint of gravel.”
