The fallibility of the primary electorate

For the most part, Democratic primary voters have done a better job of avoiding sub-replacement-level cranks on the level of Todd Akin and Christine O’Donnell in competitive primary races. This may be one reason why too many people who should have known better convinced themselves to overlook the field of red flags surrounding Graham Platner, like we just don’t make mistakes like Todd Masters. But “better” doesn’t mean “perfect,” and as it happened we got another reminder of this:
Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum has been arrested on drug possession charges in Alabama after police say they pulled him over for erratic driving and found marijuana and meth in his vehicle.
It’s the latest legal trouble for the ex-Tallahassee mayor, who narrowly lost to Republican Ron DeSantis for governor in 2018 and was once considered a rising star of the Democratic Party.
Gillum, 46, was arrested on July 2 in Daphne, about 11 miles (17.7 kilometers) east of Mobile on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. He is charged with marijuana possession and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, the Daphne Police Department said. Jail records show he was released on July 3.
Court records for Gillum’s case were not yet available, the Baldwin County Clerk of Court’s office said. Information on a lawyer who could speak on his behalf wasn’t immediately available.
Gwen Graham probably wins if she had won the primary, killing off the political career of Ron DeSantis, and a better top of the ticket may also have salvaged the Senate race Nelson lost by 10,000 votes, a Senate seat that really could have come in handy in 2021-2. Anyway, I think we can re-declare the idea that Democratic primary electorates just don’t fuck up like this dead.
Speaking of which, Platner seems to recognize the inevitable but also seems to think that, a week away from costing Democrats any chance of retaking the Senate in an immensely important election and leaving a mess behind, that he has the moral authority to dictate his replacement. Just go away, and I don’t recall saying good luck!
