Stop me if you’ve heard this one before:
State Attorney General Ken Paxton clinched the Texas Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, defeating longtime Sen. John Cornyn as President Trump’s last-minute endorsement of Paxton helped lift another MAGA firebrand.
With 50% of the vote counted, Paxton had 63% to Cornyn’s 37%, according to the Associated Press on Tuesday night.
The outcome came after a long and ugly battle between the men and opposing factions of the GOP that sent them to a runoff Tuesday after neither won 50% of the vote in the March primary. The outcome sets up a general election contest expected to be the most competitive that deep-red Texas has seen in years. Democrats hope James Talarico, a young seminarian who has used faith-based messaging to advance progressive ideals, can defeat Paxton and help them take control of the Senate.
Paxton’s prospects might hinge on whether he can bring the party together after the bruising primary and anger among Senate Republicans that Trump turned his back on Cornyn, whom they believed would be a stronger candidate in a general election.
This was inevitable as soon as Trump endorsed Paxton, of course. But this didn’t stop Cornyn from debasing himself in a particularly wide array of ways. None of these guys deserve any better.
