I’m not going to make a habit of this, but for this post I’m going to make the Glumdrum Fraternity of Doomcasters happy and do some worst-case scenarioing.

Oldfinger is currently arguing that his attempt to overturn the 14th Amendment by Sharpie only applies to anyone born after Feb. 20, 2025. But everyone who is smarter than a Republican knows that the fetid brains responsible for “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship” won’t stop with babies. Or people whose parents weren’t U.S. citizens when they were born. If they have their way, every person who is an unperson in the beady eyes of the white supremacists will constantly have to prove their Americanness. Or try to. For natural born U.S. citizens an official birth certificate won’t suffice.

So then would would proving that at least one parent is or was a U.S. citizen be enough? To make a hollow laughing. No. These assholes have been harrassing and arresting Native Americans. An Iowa prison nearly handed a woman over to ICE for deportation even though she had a tribal ID. Iowa claimed it was a “mix up.” Other people, including actor Elaine Miles have been questioned by ICE agents who said their federal IDs were fake.

There’s no way for black and brown people to just have their papers in order in this environment because white supremacists don’t give a shit about the papers. They care about turning certain people’s existence into a criminal act.

If the white supremacists get their way, the right type and amount of documentation will be whatever they say it is and some people’s documentation will be more equal than others’.
