The saddest words in the English language are “I don’t read fiction.” And yet, even here at LGM. commenters talk about how they don’t read anymore. That’s horrible. Social media is terrible. The internet should never have been invented. We would all be better off. The whole world would be. This cancer of the internet has metastasized to destroy humanity. Well, not much we can do about that now, but you can read a book. I was struck by this piece about Paige Bueckers, the excellent WNBA rookie (assuming the greedy owners agree to a fair contract with the union), who is trying to get people to read again. Good for her, but my God it’s bad that this has to be a thing in 2026.

I go through phases between reading and watching shows, but our life is so fast and we’re always on the go, and almost everything in life is technology-based now, so it’s nice to slow down with a book. It’s a way to reconnect with yourself and get time to yourself and just get lost in a book. Like I said, our lives are so chaotic. Our life is mostly basketball, so to separate ourselves from that and get a little bit of an identity outside of basketball and find new hobbies is helpful.

I definitely think reading is cool. I know I can speak for a lot of the basketball world in that a lot of us are readers, and most of what we’re reading are physical copies, too. I think that’s really cool. And I think everything in life comes back around. You see all the retro trends coming back. To actually sit with a physical book and have that in your hands is nostalgic in a way.

It’s all about self-expression, going through life’s journey, finding yourself, and overcoming adversity and struggle. For the characters, it’s about going through trauma and being able to find yourself again; dealing with the hard parts and finding self-confidence after going through it. I think the best thing about going through adversity is getting to the other side and seeing how much you went through, how much that built you, and how much that made you stronger. And that’s what my life has been about—handling and battling adversity and getting through it and becoming better from it.

Also, the story is about two siblings and I have three younger siblings. So, knowing what it’s like to have a sibling—you fight, you make up, but you really love each other and will do anything for each other. So all of that encapsulates why I chose this book.

Read whatever. But if you aren’t reading books, you are destroying your own life for the dopamine of social media, including this website. Read this website. Do so after reading books. I read every single day, without fail. I rarely would say “do what I do.” This is one case where I would. Salvage your life. Rescue yourself from the horrors of the 21st century. Open a book, especially fiction.
