“Reporting” toward the Bezos

This was the headline on the WaPo’s effort to run interference for Donald Trump for several hours yesterday:
lol fuck off

Apparently they got enough static to soften it a little, but the text remains an attempt to create a fog where none exists:
Several forensic analysts who reviewed the signatures said they could not determine if it was Trump’s signature. One said it was difficult to tell because the writing instrument on the Epstein document produced poor line quality that obscured some of the details of the pen movement.
[…]
Congressional Republicans largely dismissed the debate.
“I think there were other signatures from that period that probably do match. But it’s a distraction,” said Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky), who has been pushing for more transparency. “In the universe of things Trump has done, and he is known for and on video doing or saying … this is small potatoes.”
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tennessee) said the signature could have easily been faked.
“I mean, anybody can do a signature,” he said. “We’ve seen the autopens been used quite a bit with the Biden administration. I’ve never known Trump to be much of an artist either, so I draw that into question.”
Asked whether he thought someone forged the document, he responded, “Yeah I mean somehow it’s so easy to do. I just don’t buy any of it right now.”
I would call this “both sides” pseudo-journalism except that that would be too generous — he can’t even be bothered to find some token Democrats to dispute the completely unfounded assertions being made by the Trump lickspittles. (The “Joe Biden used a common electronic signature device” non-sequitur is a nice touch.) And he also can’t be bothered to bring up the fact that the conspiracy theory he’s helping Republicans publicize is absolutely idiotic on its face:
The Post and Matt Viser are suggesting that 22 yrs ago someone impersonated Donald Trump in response to a request from Ghislaine Maxwell to Trump and created a fake card to embarrass him 22 yrs later when he would be President. I'm not going to dignify this nonsense with anything but laughter— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm.bsky.social) Sep 9, 2025 at 5:29 PM
Clearly, what happened here is that when Barack Obama Sr. and Ann Dunham planted a fake birth announcement in a Hawaiian newspaper knowing that their Kenyan born son would be a candidate for president decades later, they also forged a birthday message from Donald Trump to his good friend Jeffrey Epstein knowing that Trump would eventually became president, and managed to seamlessly insert it into a bound book. Case closed!
Whether Viser was ordered to do this by the Murdoch third-stringer running Jeff Bezos’s newspaper or just wanted to curry his favor, no reporter with an iota of self-respect could have put his byline on this shit.
