A few notes to help you get in the Spirt of 76 for the country’s Big Beautiful 249th birthday celebration:

(1) Per Gallup, Donald Trump’s approval rating is two points higher after five months in office than it was at the same point in his term in 2017 (40% to 38%).

(2) 65.5% of eligible voters either voted for Trump last November or didn’t bother to vote.

(3) A UK journalist (OK, the Daily Mail: It’s a steady job) asked Trump this morning as he was about to jet off to visit Alligator Alcatraz whether he would consider deporting Elon Musk:

@Emilylgoodin

Here is the full quote from President Trump when I asked him if he’ll deport Elon Musk: “I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look. We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.”

(4) Miami woman says her whole family voted for Trump and her husband believed him when he said he would deport criminals. But now Ariel Lara is in a Texas ICE prison awaiting deportation to Cuba after being taken into custody at an immigration hearing in South Florida, and his wife Elena is left alone with their 7-month-old son and Ariel’s 70-year-old grandmother.

Guess what, Elena: When Trump was talking about criminals he was talking about your husband, and you, and your baby. And yes I feel sorry for you because you are an ignorant moron which probably isn’t your fault, given the culture and all, and they say compassion is a virtue, but I don’t have the time.

(5) I got into an argument this morning on the Michigan football board — it’s the deadest part of the offseason — with somebody over whether Kamala Harris was a terrible candidate or not. My view is that two thirds of this country is either actively white supremacist, or OK with white supremacy given the price of eggs, or ignorant morons who don’t realize that MAGA is more than any other single thing a white supremacist movement (see stats above), and that under those circumstances arguing about candidate quality is like arguing about the kitchen backsplash when the house is burning down.

Donald Trump is the most terrible person in every possible way to even run for president let alone win, and he’s been elected twice, because we are a terrible country.
