It is Bill Cassidy’s legacy that RFK wasted little time in violating even the specific promises he made him:
“The claim that this will restore trust is absurd on its face,” said Dorit Reiss, a professor at UC Law San Francisco. Reiss said she believed the changes were legal, but that “it’s a blatantly political move. It’s going to further undermine trust.”
Once a relatively obscure panel, ACIP has become a political lightning rod given Kennedy’s history of criticizing vaccine safety. Kennedy had promised Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana that he would “maintain” the ACIP committee “without changes” before he was confirmed, Cassidy said in a February speech on the Senate floor after deciding to vote in favor of the nomination.
Cassidy wrote in a post on X that the fear is that the panel will be repopulated with people who view vaccines with suspicion.
“I’ve just spoken with Secretary Kennedy, and I’ll continue to talk with him to ensure this is not the case,” said Cassidy, and I assume that he left out the part where he also gave him his bank information and his wife’s cell number and Zoom handle.
We should be clear that this hangs 100% on Cassidy. He’s not a moron and knew unambiguously what he was as voting for. RFK wasn’t nominated in spite of being the most prominent anti-vaxxer in the country but because of it. Every dead kid that results from this is his full responsibility (along with the rest of the Republican conference minus one.) The fact that Cassidy has to keep drawing these desperate red lines he knows Kennedy wil violate is just pathetic.
