Social Security projections for ten years from now have almost no meaningful margin of error. We know how many people are going to be drawing it, and we know how big the economy is going to be. Which means that either benefits get cut by 30% (obviously a horrible policy choice, and also completely politically impossible), or taxes get raised, either directly, or indirectly via more deficit spending.
However if you have a party based on a combination of Oppositional Defiance Disorder, fundamentalist eschatological fever dreams, and a generalized commitment to stealing everything that either isn’t nailed down or can’t be pried loose with a jackhammer, this is what you get.
Of course the media will frame this situation as an example of “gridlock,” which is pretty much the same kind of gridlock that occurs when my toddler offers to stop screaming if I just give her everything she wants right now.
