I had the great pleasure of talking to Stephanie McCurry, R. Gordon Hoxie Professor of American History in Honor of Dwight D. Eisenhower at Columbia University (quite a title!) about her 2019 book Women’s War: Fighting and Surviving the American Civil War. This will be of great interest to many of you because it is a story of three stories of women and gender in the Civil War, but it is also a larger meditation on the need to think about women as combatants in war, the problem with how women are routinely defined as non-combatants by the UN even today, and how McCurry’s own life growing up in Belfast during the Troubles influences her thought on this. First rate podcast, in my opinion. Check it out.
