Will Congressional certification of electoral college votes become yet another barrier to democracy? (Also includes Gilligan’s Island content)

Right now, the odds that in January of 2025 Joe Biden or Kamala Harris or some other Democrat will have just won the presidential election, while Republicans will have gained or retained control of both houses of Congress, are pretty good (It will be extremely difficult for Democrats to hold the House in 2022, given normal off year election dynamics, while the Senate continues to be so loaded against them demographically that winning control of it will always be a struggle for the foreseeable future).

What this sets up is a situation where the current normalization of Republicans refusing to concede the presidential election to a Democratic winner can be played out by that election being stolen via the certification process. I think the odds of something like this happening are far from negligible, and that it will be shall we say interesting to see if the American political system can withstand that sort of total war mentality.

On an even grimmer note, 2020 and COVID-19 have decided that two survivors of Gilligan’s Island was one too many.

This may be just a little weird, but when I was around seven or eight, I would often have a dream that featured a beauty contest in which the contestants were Ginger, Mary Ann, Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie, Agent 99 from Get Smart, Morticia Addams from the Addams Family, and Judy Robinson and Penny Robinson from Lost in Space.

Morticia generally won — not surprisingly I would go on to purchase several Cure CDs a couple of decades later — but Mary Ann tended to be a strong runner up.

RIP.
