Tonight’s entry is this more than slightly terrifying 1993 Canadian PSA.

What’s really notable about this, other than the horrifying puppets in your face and of course the potential to turn it all into sex jokes, is the assumption, so common in those days, that strangers are out there to kill, rape, and poison small children. The freakout of the 1980s and 1990s about this was very real and also very ridiculous. What else is interesting is that the children who grew up in this, i.e., my generation, are probably the most overprotective generation of parents in American history, often fearful of their children doing anything that might smack of even the slightest risk. Whether this is a product of hearing these messages or not as a kid, I don’t know.
