Adam Weinstein has an interesting post/interview on a campaign for atheist chaplains in the military.  While elements of the argument make sense, I do wonder if we have a definitional issue; is a chaplain without religious creed a chaplain, or rather simply a counselor or advisor? I suppose this gets to a question that at the heart of modern atheism, which is whether atheism represents an abandonment of creed or a creed in and of itself.  Nevertheless, the idea of atheist chaplains seems to me to be of the same family as tofurky; a concept that we find understandable given social context, but that still represents a significant and perhaps unnecessary concession.
