Republicans Don’t Care About the Deficit, One Part of A Potentially Endless Series

It’s appropriate that the day the predictably awful report of the Catfood Commission is released, Republicans have made clear exactly how credible their commitment to deficit reduction is:

The Republican position is that it’s fiscally irresponsible to temporarily extend unemployment benefits during an economic crisis. But they might accept a “compromise” to extend them along with a vastly more expensive and completely un-paid-for extension of the Bush tax cuts! If I were more cynical I might doubt the sincerity of their claim to be concerned about the national debt.

What’s depressing is that given the political abilities of the Democrats the Republicans will probably get most of all of their precious upper-class tax cuts and won’t even have to extend unemployment benefits.
