Kameron Hurely notes that “morning after” contraception will soon be available over the counter in my former home and still native land. Obviously, this is the best way around pharmacist interposition (although as Hurely notes, who knows–maybe cashiers will refuse to ring up sales.) I also enjoyed this quote from a Canadian wingnut:

Mary Ellen Douglas of Campaign Life Coalition said she’s upset no one will discuss any moral concerns with girls seeking the drug.

“I can’t believe these girls are going to be intensely concerned about what they’re taking,” said Douglas. “They’re going to be thinking, ‘I acted irresponsibly and I must make sure my mother doesn’t find out. Now give me the pill.'”

Look, if becoming pregnant is the price a woman has to pay to allow her mother to find out she’s having sex, then the price must be paid. Moral lessons can only be learned the hard way! And, needless to say, women will never consider the moral dimensions of childbirth without consulting their most important philosophical and spiritual guide, their pharmacist.

By the way, do these groups ever complain about men buying condoms without receiving stern “moral” lectures, or ask for condoms to be sold by prescription only? It seems to me that this is, at least, rather less common. It’s almost enough to shake my faith in the contention that campaigners for life are concerned with protecting “life” as opposed to expressing loathing for female sexuality…
