One of Yglesias’s commenters nails it:

Bush was at times defensive, insecure and peevish. Sometimes he almost seemed to be defending his intelligence, as when he kept insisting “I know how the world works.” It reminded me of the scene in Godfather II when Michael confronts his halfwit older brother, played by John Casale[sic]. Casale[sic] is mad that Michael is the one who is in charge, and yells something like “I’m smart! I know things!”

Rob is also right in the comments. When litigating murder and rape cases in the Jim Crow South, Thurgood Marshall would say that when one of his defendants only got life in prison, he knew the defendant was innocent. The attempt of conservative blogs to tepidly argue for a draw tells you all you need to know. And, indeed, it’s even worse than that. When you’ve lost Mickey Kaus, you’re in deep shit.

Of course, people are capable of remarkable levels of bad faith and hackdom. There were some who insisted that African-Americans could get due process under Jim Crow. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Hugh Hewitt!
