This is how far I got into David Brooks’ latest column:

In weak moments, I think the best ticket for this country would be Bush-Kerry. The two men balance each other out so well.

Kerry can’t make a decision; Bush makes them too quickly.

I couldn’t go any further. Another sentence might cause permanent damage. It’s possible that Brooks uses the rest of the column to make a deep insight into American politics, redeeming not only the first three sentences but his entire tenure at the Times. It is also possible that Jacques Chirac and the entire French government will resign later this evening in favor of the true heir to the Bourbon throne.

The latter is somewhat more likely than the former.

UPDATE: Apparently, King Juan Carlos of Spain has a reasonable claim on the French throne. Who knew? The best candidate appears to be Henri Philippe Pierre Marie.
