One reason I’ve not been posting lately is that I’ve spent entirely too much time drinking and recovering from drinking over the last few days.

At any rate, through the smoky haze last night a fellow boozer told me that there will be no more Maker’s Mark sold in Washington state until 2005, except for a precious few bottles remaining on the shelves. The reason? The Washington state liquor control board, which sells liquor directly here, apparently places orders with distributors once a year, and severely underestimated the popularity of the fine whiskey in question this year. I don’t know if this is true, but the source of the information is a serious enough drinker that I trust him to not traffic in idle rumors. A google search revealed no confirmation.

If this is indeed an accurate account of the situation, it’s further evidence that the liquor laws in this state are a classic case of unnecessary and inefficient regulation. Why they would be so committed to such a rigid policy is beyond me. If anyone local can confirm or dispute this rumor, please do. In the meantime, I’m hiding my remaining half-filled bottle of Maker’s Mark; it may have to last for a while.
