Begin the Thawing Coming Out of Jim Nabors

[ 26 ] January 30, 2013 |

In Seattle, good for the state’s voters:

Jim Nabors, best known as Gomer Pyle from “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” has just wed his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, in Seattle, according to Hawaii News Now.

The couple traveled from their Honolulu home to Washington, where same-sex marriage became legal last month, and got married on Jan. 15. The ceremony was held in the privacy of their hotel room at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, where they were joined by two friends — their neighbors from near Diamond Head — who served as witnesses. According to the actor, the couple first met in 1975, when Cadwallader — who is now — was a Honolulu firefighter.

I wonder if this will be cause for renaming Sylacauga’s Jim Neighbors Memorial Highway?

  11. bill says:

Ironic: A gay Gomer Pyle USMC in those days would have been blanket-partied and discharged so fast it’d make your head spin, and an openly gay Jim Nabors would never have gotten the part in the first place.

  12. Halloween Jack says:

I’m a little surprised (surprise, surprise, surprise!) at this, because there was an old rumor that Nabors and Rock Hudson had been secretly married; in response to this, Armistead Maupin had, in one of his Tales of the City novels, a very-thinly-disguised Hudson, with the backstory that mentioned the rumor and made the claim that the Nabors character was actually straight. I’d taken that as a statement of fact.

    Diamond Head!

Good on ye, Jim and Stan.

  14. DrDick says:

Nice story about a nice person.

  15. Breadbaker says:

I’m hoping this will have a nice effect on the mainstreaming of gay marriage in the kinds of places where Nabors is hugely popular. This isn’t stereotypical flaming; it’s 38 years of a stable relationship and a quiet, private ceremony (two blocks from my office). I wish them well and I hope a serious benefit will come from this.
