Bombings, or cultural heritage?

Tacitus is a fine blogger, and it’s really too bad that he’s gone on vacation for a month, and turned tacitus.org over to schmoes like this:

Which is actually more newsworthy, something we hear about every day (terrorist bombings) or previously unheard of signs that Iraqis are stepping forth and taking steps to restore their country? One last note. As Chrenkoff points out in describing these terrorists and “insurgents”, they are enemies of freedom and democracy and I for one will call them as such (EOFADs?).

“Bird Dog” is trying to compare two stories, one from the New York Times, and one from Arthur Chernikof. The NYT points out a series of bombings against Iraqi churches. Chernikof talks up the “Global Heritage Fund” which is apparently stepping up efforts to protect Iraqi archaeological sites. Bird Dog seems to believe that the latter is a much bigger story than the former, and that reporting on church bombings in Iraq is evidence of relentless liberal bias.

Hmm.

I seem to recall that the warbloggers couldn’t have cared less about the looting of Iraqi museums and archaeological sites in April of 2003, when they were still in triumph mode. Back then, expressing concern about Iraqi treasures meant that you were an effete liberal, and probably gay as well. That the media reported on it was evidence of left wing bias. Now, reporting on the protection Iraqi heritage takes precedence over reporting on the bombing of churches.

Of course, none of this begins to take into account the fact that CHURCHES ARE PART OF IRAQ’S CULTURAL HERITAGE, and thus that reporting on their destruction is cultural reporting.

UPDATE: Juan Cole has an excellent post on the churches and the attacks.
