Query…
Jakob Dylan has announced plans for an upcoming nation-wide tour with his band Jakob Dylan and Three Legs, which features Neko Case and Kelly Hogan. The tour is set to kick off April 9th in Pittsburgh, PA in support of his newest album Women and Country set for release April 6th. Prior to the release, Jakob will showcase his album in Austin at this year’s SXSW Festival, where he will be playing shows at Paste Magazine and Rachael Ray’s annual parties.
So… if I have no interest in seeing Jakob Dylan, but would really like to see Neko Case, is this something I should be wasting my precious cubits on?

Cubits?
All the cool kids use Quatloos these days.
I’d wait until Neko is touring solo to see her.
Kelly Hogan is very good too. It would probably be worth it.
From the looks of it, you should only buy tickets if you want to see Neko singing Jakob Dylan’s songs. So the answer is probably no.
Personally, I like seeing Neko Case sing AC Newman’s songs, and with a new album out soon, New Pornographers will probably tour this year.
The New Pornographers are playing the Sasquatch Festival in Seattle Memorial Day weekend
Just a quibble, but Sasquatch is actually in George, Washington. Which matters because it’s a 2 hour drive on a clear day, and a 5 hour drive if it’s a Friday preceding Memorial Day, and there’s an accident on I-90 (as my girlfriend and I discovered last year).
Kelly Hogan is a force of nature and not the easiest ticket out there. If it takes a Dylan to get her some mic time, so be it.
Try to hear some of his album first. If it isn’t mind-rendingly bad, risk the show in hopes that they’ll play some Neko songs. Especially if it’s at a good, small venue rather than a big hall.
OT: Rachael Ray has parties at SXSW? And that hasn’t crushed the street cred of the whole thing? WTF?
Ray has been doing food sponsored parties at SXSW for a few years. And although I can’t stand seeing Ray on tv, her presence at SXSW doesn’t diminish its street cred. For years now, its been a weird combination of record company promotion, indy presence, corporate sponsorship and everything else in the world connected to the music industry. At Ray’s party, held in connection with Mr. and Mrs. T which makes Bloody Mary Mix, there’s also going to be Justin Townes Earle and a whole host of other acts.
I’m having this same dilemma. I also had it last summer when the Hold Steady opened for [shudder] the Dave Matthews Band. The $60 tickets made my decision for me. (I don’t know how many cubits that converts to.)
The album is good (T-Bone Burnett produced along with his usual crew of musicians including Jay Bellerose, my favorite drummer in the world) so I would definitely recommend seeing them live.
I would see it just to see her. She makes crappy artists sound good. Well worth the cubits.
I was going to say that I had seen Hogan and Case performing as the Corn Sisters, but that was actually Carolyn Mark (although Hogan performs on some of their songs). Nonetheless, you should go unless Dylan’s new album is really, really crappy. (Although you should get another chance to see them together, as IIRC Hogan is now a permanent member of Neko Case’s post-Boyfriends backup band.)
Jakob Dylan does not get the respect deserving of a moderately talented offspring of a performing legend. And I mean that both tongue-in-cheek AND 100% seriously.
Robert. Neko Case. Kelly Hogan. Those are the only four words you need to focus on. You would not be wasting cubits, shekels, yen or anything else. If you doubt me, Google the terms “The Jody Grind” or “Rock*a*teens” and find some of their music.
