In light of Donald Trump doing things like making an agreement with his own government to create a $2 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund for his cronies and very possibly himself in his family, historians may struggle to comprehend that he became president in substantial measure because 1)his first opponent was widely portrayed as uniquely corrupt and 2)the primary basis for this was non-compliance with non-legally-binding guidelines concerning information privacy. (Indeed, typing it out it remains as crazy as ever.) The person perhaps more responsible for this than anyone else, however, remains convinced that he did nothing wrong:

The prosecutions of Comey are unjust and worthy of numerous people being fired/impeached, but he's still a combination of dipshit and liar. He was very much "in politics" when he broke multiple DOJ policies with his little stunts like the press conference and the late letter.

The thing is, to both Comey and the political press he had a symbiotic relationship with, they’re not lying per se when they claim that stuff like repeatedly violating department guidelines to issue editorial statements and letters implying that Hillary Clinton was a crook even though she was repeatedly cleared of doing anything actually illegal during a presidential campaign isn’t “political.” To people like Comey, “Hillary Clinton is guilty of something and the only question is of what” is just a fact of nature — it’s no more “political” than saying that the Potomac is a river or that Baltimore is in Maryland. That he has now been frivolously indicted by the actually historically corrupt president his own personal coup but in the White House is just the white fly in your Montepulciano.

By the way, Nate Silver’s careful demonstration that even given very conservative estimates Comey’s letter alone probably threw the election to Trump remains available on the Wayback Machine. You broke it, you bought it, buddy.
