I’m not sure I could invent a better encapsulation of how easily Trump has been able to capture Republican elites who make the occasional show of skepticism:

I emphasize again that it would be foolish to take this as pure bluster from Trump — has already bombed schools and bridges with no possible military justification. But even assuming arguendo that you could, what kind of sicko would rather have a president who threatens systematic war crimes than a president who recognizes trans people as equal citizens? Cf. also Sohrab “if given the choice between democracy and drag queens being forbidden from appearing in public, I will take the latter” Ahmari. Paul von Hindenburg put up a tougher fight.
