Any “system” (1) only works when a critical mass of people want it to work; (2) is going to reflect the underlying currents and divisions among the population.
Our system was broken as soon as the GOP polled their own voters a month or so after the insurrection and decided to jump on the bandwagon—and if they hadn’t, they would have been primaried by people who would. The fact that Trump is going to be the nominee even though he cost the GOP the midterms and is demonstrably more likely to lose than a guy who does exactly the same shit but is younger and less visibly unhinged seals the deal.
Southernized white people and their fellow travelers do not want a secular multi-racial democracy, have never wanted one, cannot live in one, full-stop. The system is and will continue to evolve to reflect that, one way or another. The only question is how much longer the rest of the country will live in denial.
