The “Tort Reform” Scam

One of the few specific health care reforms Republicans are willing to endorse are caps on lawsuit damages.   Needless to say, Rick Perry has been touting the caps in Texas.    The problem is that while they prevent some malpractice victims from being adequately compensated, they don’t actually reduce insurance costs or lead to more people getting insured.  They’re very effective at insulating powerful interests from accountability, but otherwise accomplish nothing — classic Republican policy in other words.   And a classic example of the fraudulent “Texas miracle.”
