Donald Trump was booed mercilessly at last night’s World Series game — including chants of “Lock him up!” — despite great precautions being taken by his PR crew to try to intermingle the crowd’s response to their boss with the standard Salute To Our Military Heroes.

Surprisingly, I haven’t actually seen any pearl-clutching about this incident, although I haven’t really looked for any.

One thing that hasn’t gotten enough attention is the extent to which Trump’s entire presidency is a complete disaster in terms of the most basic democratic norms. It’s not merely that he got nearly three million fewer votes than Hillary Clinton — that at least gets remarked on from time to time. The more striking fact is that at no point in his nearly-three year presidency has Trump enjoyed anything close to the support of even a bare majority of Americans. That is a completely unprecedented situation.

Perhaps that helps explain why there seems to be remarkably little whinging from the usual suspects about last night’s egregious outburst of lese majeste.
