On nights I know I will be alone for an hour or two or three I often make dinners just for me–brothy, noodly or veggie-intensive stuff.

This past Friday I was excited to try out a recipe for Spicy Pork Miso Soup. I even purchased whole star anise pods and Schezuapn peppercorns specifically for the dish. Long story short it was terrible, oh so terrible. It tasted like a bowl full of miso water. The saltiness of the miso actually coated my mouth. There was no depth of flavor whatsoever. Was there pork in there? Pepper, anise, cilantro, chicken stock? I couldn’t tell because ALL I COULD TASTE WAS FERMENTED SALT. I’m shocked that a dish that looked so gorgeous–and mine was a pretty as a picture!!!–could taste that bad.
