We Yankee-haters thought we had at least a couple-year rebuilding respite, but nope — they’re right back in the playoffs. (Ah, for the 80s version of Steinbrenner, who would have fired Cashman and Girardi long ago.) And controlling the board at the end of our fantasy auction, I effectively had the choice between CHris Devanski and Aaron Judge and picked the former. (To be Sucrupulously Fair, our league uses holds and Judge hit 270/366/489 as a 24-year-old in AAA and didn’t even have clear possession of a job, but Christ.) Anyway, congratulations to Howard — a Planned Parenthood donation has been on his behalf as per our usual pre-season wager.

And in the wild card game, they’re facing…the Minnesota Twins, a team which has not beaten the Yankees since Stump Merrill was fired. Are the Twins going to try to beat the Yankees with a pitch-to-contact retread? I think you know the answer! Perhaps Ron Gardenhire can guest-manage for old time’s sake.

Still, the Twins are an interesting story. The first two years of Molitor’s managerial career were an extreme example of the classic pattern of the generic manager — over-achievement in the first year, giving it all back and more the second year. I think it’s unprecedented for a manager in that situation to hugely overachieve in the 3rd year, and indeed this was a Billy Martin-style improvement, plus presumably with fewer fistfights and considerably less bourbon consumption. And while there was a little luck both ways the improvement was mostly real — the Pythagorean losses improved from 96 to 79. It’s hard to know what to make of it but I’d say he’s done a good job on balance. Now PROVE ME WRONG.
