Putin Visits Olympics

Have had a couple of requests, so for people who want to discuss the excellent WAS/PIT game or the hopefully excellent ANA/EDM game, here you go. Justin Williams might come through for the Caps, but there was another secret weapon available…

A whole period to go, but it appears that the Caps may be… the Caps.
I didn’t watch the last game, but 12 goals in a playoff game? WTF!?!
Heart says Edmonton, head says Ducks.

Rooting for the Pens and Oilers tonight. Gotta root for my Canadian team, and I can’t go against Crosby. Up 2-0 right now, hold on for the win!

    • efgoldman

Well, at least there’s ONE goddamned team who knows how to play five on six with the other net empty.
I still don’t know when or how Fleury turned into Ken Dryden, though.

  • rfm

    Let’s go Pens.

  • Scott Lemieux

Well, Caps played well for two periods and Fleury was great, and then just shit the bed in the third.

    • keta

Fleury was terrific, but man oh man did the Pens defencemen ever have a terrific game.

It’s a team game, but add one more big, big win for Crosby over Ovechkin (who was the lazy culprit on the Penguins second goal.)

Not that I care, but how can the Caps ever sign anybody, even their own players, with Ovy’s contract? Hell, even his buyout is $33.3 million.

        • keta

Well, the Pens pay Crosby 900 grand more than the Caps do Ovie, plus pay Malkin a mere 500 grand less than Ovie, so really the question should be, “how do the Penguins keep icing a competitive team with two huge salaries on their roster?”

          • rfm

They nailed a few mid round picks and undrafted FA signings and made a couple great trades. It’s a little ironic considering they drafted so poorly for several years, which was at least part of the reason they flamed out so much between 2010 and 2015.

        • Scott Lemieux

1)The Caps have one of the deepest rosters in the league. 2)The primary reason they lost game 7 is that Ovechkin and to a lesser extent Backstrom didn’t play well.

          • (((max)))

Yes, and that seems to be the actual curse. Ovechkin gets into the playoffs and *poof*… where’d he go? (Happened last year. And the year before…)

Can’t blame it on Holtby. Outside of the one bad game, he held the Pens to 2 goals in 4 games, and 3 goals in 2 games.

[‘Where o where has the Caps offense gone, O where oh where has it gone?’]

            • Ovie is where he always is. standing in the left hand circle with his stick in the air, waiting for a pass.

      • koolhand21

Ovechkin the only Caps player on the ice for both Pens goals. When I think about Alex in the playoffs I just get choked up. Probably from having laughed so much.

        • keta

This former goaltender loves that Ovechkin’s best scoring chance was thwarted by the shaft of Fleury’s stick.

        • Craigo

He’s probably the Russian with the least influence in Washington right now.

        • Scott Lemieux

Not just one the ice; his turnover led directly to the second goal.

  • Linnaeus

    Go Ottawa.

  • Linnaeus

Refs missed a slash that would have given Anaheim a 5 on 3, and Silfverberg should have buried that shot.

    • Scott Lemieux

Yeah, they always call penalties in that situation. Bad missed call there. Ducks really coming on though.

  • Linnaeus

Kesler outmuscling the Edmonton defense there.

  • Linnaeus

Ducks are really taking this game over. Edmonton hasn’t been able to do much since the middle of the second period.

    • efgoldman

Oilers are a year and another big. mobile defenseman away. Great series, though, and they are incredibly fun to watch.

      • Linnaeus

They are fun, and this was a better series than I thought it would be. Ducks’ forecheck in this game, though, looked to be a bit too much for the Oilers to handle – lots of turnovers and failed breakouts in the second half of the game. A big defenseman would help with that. Edmonton made a lot of small mistakes that added up, like passes that were just a bit off, pucks going to empty space, etc.
