I guess it’s not surprising that the Russians would see Trump as one of their own, an appealing figure to sell whatever.

At some point we are going to have to ask ourselves what the Putins, Orbans, and Trumps of the world have in common and the answer is not going to be anti-globalism. At least not in the way leftists mean it.

I dare not call this an axis of evil but a coalition of the chilling?

At some point we are going to have to ask ourselves what the Putins, Orbans, and Trumps of the world have in common ….

That they’re all supported by really rich people? And that the time has come to confiscate the wealth of Gates, Zuckerberg, Wilbur Ross and those of that ilk?

      • aturner339

Yes clearly the answer to the rise of right wing xenophobia is to round up a bunch of rich liberals.

        • MAJeff

I think Phil would settle for rounding up all liberals.

          • Phil Perspective

Why do you think Zuckerberg and Gates are your friends? Hint: they aren’t.

            • liberal

I’m struck by the fact that, with all the yammering about how calamitous the election is, no one is asking what these rich fucks are doing about it. (Apparently nothing, AFAICT. Oh, yeah, Zuckerberg did put out a very good statement against Trump on that anti-Muslim crap, but putting massive amounts of money into doing anything? Nope.)

              • Phil Perspective

Didn’t you hear? Zuckerberg has now found God, or religion of some sort, and hopes to run for political office at some point while retaining control of Facebook.

                • aturner339

You notice how we stopped criticizing Putin all of a sudden. So weird.

        • Phil Perspective

Zuckerberg and Gates are liberals? They’re both into destroying public schools. Maybe you’re okay with that. I’m not. I have a higher bar. Anyway, why do either of them need billions of dollars? $200 million isn’t enough?

          • aturner339

Actually is there a bar we could inspect? Is there a point in here?

            • jim, some guy in iowa

Phil’s given up on electoral politics and is ready to lead the Glorious People’s Revolution

              • N__B

What about us non-glorious people? Do we get a revolution, too?

            • Phil Perspective

Yes. Expropriate their wealth. I’m using Zuckerberg and Gates as examples because everyone knows who they are. I wouldn’t stop there. Sheldon Adelson. Trump. The whole lot. Go all FDR/Huey Long on them and then some. Give it back to the people it was stolen from.

              • Gee Suss

what is your example of a politician that you would support wholeheartedly?

                • N__B

Julius Caesar’s platform was quite populist.

                • what is your example of a politician that you would support wholeheartedly?

What in the world makes you think that Phil, of all people, would support anyone “wholeheartedly”? I’d assume he would be in favor of “critical support” when appropriate. Me too, come to that.

              • SatanicPanic

How do you plan on beating Trump to the punch? Because I’m sure he’s already contemplating how to appropriate their wealth for himself, like his buddy Putin.

        • liberal

“Confiscating [much of] the wealth of” is “rounding up”?

          • aturner339

Rounding down. Whatever. It’s a thoroughgoing non answer and some really blatant trolling.

            • Phil Perspective

You’re the troll. Why does racism flourish? Rich people use it to keep the working class divided and fighting amongst themselves.

Why does racism flourish? Rich people use it to keep the working class divided and fighting amongst themselves.

                This is, at best, incomplete.

                • aturner339

One wonders if that might be the very object. As if to discuss right wing xenophobia as something other than a global conspiracy of bankers and capitalists *cough* would impinge on certain other interests.

Authoritarianism. The appeal of the Strongman. Daddy will fix everything. Yes, there will be some spankings…

      • aturner339

Yes and by “everything” we always seem to mean “teh mooslims.”

Not always, no. Sometimes it’s scary black people, or Mexican (or Central American) immigrants, or women who fail to simper properly, or…

Use Trump sugar when you make you raspberry Putin.

Add a little Trump to your putinesca sauce

A teaspoon of sugar helps the fascism go down.

Tut tut, liberal! This insult toward Trump is untoward! Tut tut!

I’m guessing that it’s the “TPAMΠ”

    Directly transliterated as “TRAMP”.

This picture reminds me of footage of early World War 2 from the western USSR. Initially much of the population welcomed the Germans as liberators and there was video of the locals buying up books and postcards about Hitler in local stores.

  • ultramarina

I’d like to share my picture from the newsstand at Dulles Airport of the display of Trump souvenirs, but I am daunted by the idea of having to go to Gravatar and master that platform to attach the image. I have no desire to register on yet another platform, alas.

There’s a part of me that wants to scream “BUT HE HASN’T EVEN DONE ANYTHING” but then again at this point in 2009 Obama was already getting lined up for a Nobel Prize (which in hindsight even he thinks was ridiculous).

One criticism a reasonable person could make about American politics is that we’re overly-concerned with the presidency at the expense of other races. The fact that it’s not “cool” to care about your state legislature is part of the reason why the Republicans control so many of them.

I suppose the same can be said of foreigners though, too. Even discounting for the fact that the President controls thousands of nuclear warheads and the world’s largest economy, many people overseas seem to be a little too obsessed with the celebrity of the office…
