Some Wednesday Links: Angry Turds Edition

Probably gonna be pretty-links laden these days because I’m in the process of moving and links posts are fairly easy to do. And also I’ve just been stumbling across a bunch of really interesting/funny/horrifying stuff I want to share with you guys.

• White Supremacists think popular culture is finally getting #woke because of…the new “Angry Birds” movie. I saw it. (Flawed, some pacing problems but ultimately cute, funny and enjoyable.) And I’ll be awfully surprised if anyone behind the scenes were thinking of the coming GREAT RACE WAR when making it.
• Imagine a political party where a man performing a striptease at a convention is only the second-weirdest thing it produced. Meet, Augustus Sol Invictus, a man who literally sacrificed a goat and drank its blood.
• When women complain about the ubiquity of hyper-sexualized characters in comics and other mediums, the retort is commonly “But the men are sexy and objectified, too!” But that charge could not be wronger. Ultimately male characters in comics are for the male gaze, not the female gaze. Even some men on romance novel covers do not conform to the standard that women (many, not all…and women are not a monolith) seem to prefer.
• You’ve heard of fake geek girls and fake hiker girls…but have you heard of fake reader girls? Well, they’re here! And they’re reading just to annoy you! Shakezula asks “What’s next?” Pretty sure it’s gonna be #FakeBreatherGirls.
