Scott Miller, R.I.P.

In addition to his legacy as the leader of two good bands, he was a wonderful critic — I’ve found a lot of excellent music from his “Music, What Happened?” series, and in the ultimate test of criticism he rewards reading even when the music is familiar or when you disagree with the bottom-line judgement.

In a great tribute, the long out-of-print Game Theory albums have been made available on his website — start with Lolita Nation among the proper albums, although Tinker to Evans to Chance is a very useful overview. See also this Salon tribute.

    Shit. Shit, shit, shit.

  • It hit me really hard, too.

He was reportedly going to go back in the studio.

Yeah…recording with a reunited Game Theory, no less.

Cranking “Tinker to Evers to Chance” as I write…

What a drag – haven’t listened to Game Theory in years, but I still find myself humming “Where You Going Northern?” every week or so.

Time to pull out some of the old vinyl.

  • Lolita Nation is a sprawling, messy masterwork. Days for Days is also one of my favorites.

Another music-related RIP: Storm Thorgerson, the artist behind Pink Floyd’s iconic album covers.
