On this week’s episode of Foreign Entanglements, Matt spoke with Gil Troy about the Israeli election results:

With regards to Israel’s relations with the Palestinians, the US, and the rest of the world the elections are meaningless. The policies are not going to change in anything other than cosmetically. I know that everybody here disagrees with me about everything. But, I fail to see how the Israeli election changes anything with regards to Israeli foreign policy.
Because Yitzhak Rabin and Ariel Sharon had identical policies.
Sharon and Rabin did not run in this last election. Yaer Lapid’s party is going to form a coalition with Likud so how are the policies going to be different from the previous Likud government? The Prime Minister is going to be the same person, Netanyahu. Is he going to radically change his policies now? How? Why?
I misread you as saying the election could not have changed anything. My bad, and my apologies.
Dropping to a one-vote margin for their government might or might not motivate Likud to curb itself, but if this indicates a trend, then could well be a very different coalition next time.
Now, not having listened to the video, I’d simply say that this election is fundamentally about people interested in economic issues, but not so interested enough that they’re willing to deal with the Occupation, which underlies everything.
Or, reading what you say closely, I’d say that this is the process of integrating consent for real economic change, and narrows further discussion towards Gaza and West Bank. The next effective governing coalition will have won with some kind of plan for winding some of that apartheid down.
