Begin the Thawing Coming Out of Jim Nabors

In Seattle, good for the state’s voters:

Jim Nabors, best known as Gomer Pyle from “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” has just wed his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, in Seattle, according to Hawaii News Now.

The couple traveled from their Honolulu home to Washington, where same-sex marriage became legal last month, and got married on Jan. 15. The ceremony was held in the privacy of their hotel room at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, where they were joined by two friends — their neighbors from near Diamond Head — who served as witnesses. According to the actor, the couple first met in 1975, when Cadwallader — who is now — was a Honolulu firefighter.

    Congratulations to the couple!

I always liked him, ever since his Andy Griffith days.
    Good comic actor. Nice voice.

I wish them the best of love, luck, health, and happiness.

  • A very happy day for them! 30 some years late, but at least it’s there now.

  • Malaclypse

    Love wins.

I loved Jim Nabors as a kid, and his Christmas album is a tradition at our household.

Many, many heartfelt congratulations to the happy couple.

  • Uncle Kvetch

    That’s just so damn nice.

  • I wonder if he’ll be allowed back into the 500.

      Back home agaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiin…???

  • AlexD

    Surprise, surprise, surprise!!

    Well, not really.

Somehow, I’ve long thought he was a fundamentalist Christian on account of all those gospel songs he recorded. So not only are congratulations in order but this is doubly good news as far as I’m concerned.

Andy Griffith made a few albums of hymns, and he was a Democrat’s Democrat IIRC.

Jimmy Carter is an evangelical Christian – while the large majority of evangelicals are Republican, not all of them are.

      • With all respect, suggesting that only evangelicals listen to gospel music is like suggesting only Roman Catholics listen to Gregorian Chants.

      • Malaclypse

        Two words: Johnny Cash.

        • Barry Freed

And I’m a huge Johnny Cash fan too, but, c’mon, Jim Nabors.

Over at the Slacktivist blog, Fred Clark recently noted that “Christian music” is a marketing brand, not a description.

    surprise, surprise, surprise

I wonder if this will be cause for renaming Sylacauga’s Jim Neighbors Memorial Highway?

Ironic: A gay Gomer Pyle USMC in those days would have been blanket-partied and discharged so fast it’d make your head spin, and an openly gay Jim Nabors would never have gotten the part in the first place.

  • Halloween Jack

I’m a little surprised (surprise, surprise, surprise!) at this, because there was an old rumor that Nabors and Rock Hudson had been secretly married; in response to this, Armistead Maupin had, in one of his Tales of the City novels, a very-thinly-disguised Hudson, with the backstory that mentioned the rumor and made the claim that the Nabors character was actually straight. I’d taken that as a statement of fact.

    Diamond Head!

Good on ye, Jim and Stan.

  • DrDick

Nice story about a nice person.

  • Shazam! Nice to hear.

I’m hoping this will have a nice effect on the mainstreaming of gay marriage in the kinds of places where Nabors is hugely popular. This isn’t stereotypical flaming; it’s 38 years of a stable relationship and a quiet, private ceremony (two blocks from my office). I wish them well and I hope a serious benefit will come from this.
