Republicans and Consent: The Former Will Never Grasp the Latter Concept

[ 28 ] October 16, 2012 | Scott Lemieux

You’ve probably heard about the Wisconsin Republican who opined that “some girls rape easy”? Well, here’s the case he was talking about:

The case Rivard was discussing was that of 17-year-old Chetek high schooler Dennis Veldman, who in November of last year was charged with raping a 14-year-old girl in his school band room. The girl says Veldman told her he wanted to have sex with her, and that she said no. He proceded to take her pants off, told her to lie still, and raped her. The girl told prosecutors that she was too scared to do anything, and that it hurt. In a deal, Veldman pled guilty to three counts of fourth degree sexual assault, for which he served 90 days in jail. Veldman returned to jail in September, when he punched a 13-year-old boy in the face, breaking his nose.

Rivard’s “some girls rape easy” comment came about a month after a child was raped in a band room.

So I guess we can expect Rivard to be the Republican candidate for the United States Senate in the next cycle?

C’mon, that kid still has amateur status. He can’t play in the GOP big leagues until he develops his “wide stance”. Perhaps he should be a Senate page for Sen. “Pampered” Vitter, which will “show” him the “ropes”.

    And more, I’m sure.

I think he’d rather wait to take over as Governor for President Walker.

That reminds me of the saying, “Republicans scream like little girls when they have their penises put into the meatgrinder that we call the revolution.”

    Right?

    Cheers,

I really wish an adult in the Republican party would take his charges aside and say “Look, pretend it’s your daughter or mother and think how you’d like it if they got raped/transvaginally probed/etc”

I want two parties, two viable parties that can work together, but if we’re going to have idiots who have to depersonalize an entire race or gender, we have a non-starter.

Unfortunately, that kind of humanizing example is already covered for them when they say things like “forcible rape”, “legitimate rape” and “some girls rape easy”. They get that bad things can happen, they’ve just conveniently got women divided into two categories: those innocent virgins/proper married ladies who put up enough of a fight, and everyone else who probably deserved it. Their mothers, daughters, aunts, nieces, second cousins, you name it are obviously part of the first group, but that girl in the band room was probably asking for it somehow.

They formulate a nearly identical dichotomy with respect to contraception, abortion, etc.

      • Heron says:

Given that they ALWAYS defend the rapist, no matter how damning the evidence(so long as he’s white at least), I’d say they’re closer to the Roman way of thinking; “If she doesn’t kill herself after it, then it wasn’t really rape.”

      Remember Tom Smith?

“I lived something similar to that with my own family, and she chose the life, and I commend her for that,” Smith said to reporters at the Pennsylvania Press Club, according to the Associated Press. “She chose the way I thought.”

He said the similarity was that the family member had “a baby out of wedlock.”

Why don’t we wish for unicorns and leprechauns while we are at it.

Sounds like a frat boy prank to me.

  6. Sev says:

She couldn’t restrain myself. These girls need to learn some restraint.

  7. Manju says:

But do they “rape rape” easy?

  8. TT says:

People who call out attempts by conservatives to trivialize rape are the real rapists.

    • Sev says:

In particular if they do so forcibly, where the conservatives cant really fight back, and shut/shout that whole thing down.

  9. c u n d gulag says:

I’m starting to wonder if, even if their Grandma’s, Mama’s, Aunts, sisters, cousins, nieces, or daughters got raped, they don’t have the remarkably inhuman and sociopathic capacity to think that they “deserved” it?

The entire Republican Party is now one that consists entirely of racists, misogynists, xenophobes, homophobes, Fascists, and/or sociopaths.

    • cpinva says:

you left out rapists and psychopaths. they’re two very “special” republican/tea party interest groups.

Plus the various fathers rights nutjobs. You know the types – “sure I violently attacked the wife and kids, but the judge denied me custody, which makes me the real victim”

Look, slut shaming is in the Bible. I think it’s the 11th commandment: “She who is looking for it…”

  11. Those of us who remember Wisconsin political history, can recall there was a time in the early eighties where a Grant County Judge referred to a five year old who had been molested by her mother’s live-in boyfriend as “sexually promiscuous”.

It’s not a new thing here, is what I’m saying.
